According to various studies, non-verbal communication is estimated to constitute a significant majority of overall communication. Some researchers suggest that up to 93% of communication effectiveness comes from non-verbal cues, while verbal content contributes to the remaining 7%. Only 7%....really ??? As a parent I have being more focus in spelling tests then to teach my 8 year old daughter how to be aware of how she expresses herself.
I can see an abismo between what we try to teach our kids and what the world demands from us as adults.
Non-verbal communication is a powerful and integral aspect of human interaction. While spoken or written words convey explicit messages, non-verbal cues often communicate nuances, emotions, and unspoken information. It adds depth, nuance, and emotional resonance to verbal messages, contributing significantly to the richness of communication in various personal, professional, and societal contexts.
Let´s think about that: First Impressions: Research suggests that first impressions are heavily influenced by non-verbal cues. Factors such as handshake strength, eye contact, and body posture contribute significantly to forming initial judgments about an individual.
Non-verbal communication also extends to spatial relationships. Proxemics, the study of personal space, reveals cultural and individual variations in comfort zones and the acceptable distance between individuals during interactions. I´m sure more than one of us are thinking about the un-comfort level.
Well, it seems that being aware of the various factors that contribute to communication skills provides adults with the knowledge and tools to support and nurture their development. This awareness empowers us!
We all learn about social communication through various channels, and the understanding of social interactions develops gradually over time. Here are key influences: Family, peers, school, books and story, media and technology, role models, and others. So, let me ask you this.... when do we learn to be aware of those factores? When do we learn how to have that kind of power?
